Communists were active in America in the 1860s, contemporaneous with the anti-slavery movement. They found common cause with the Abolitionists, the Quakers, and Methodist, and other churches in the North. From there, it was an easy move to labor laws and worker's rights that developed in the aftermath of the Civil War.
That 100 year period of American history, Civil War thru the Civil Rights was a very good time for Communists in America. Not simply because the adherents gained traction, but because the basic tenets of Communism crept into American Republican Democracy to a degree so deep that many believe those tenets to be as American as apple pie, part of the American landscape and psyche.
Islam is doing the same thing today when they claim that Franklin based his ideas of freedom on the quran and wanted a mosque in Philly, Jefferson read and studied the quran to better his life, that America itself was discovered by Muslims because the lookout on Columbus' ship who saw land first was a Muslim forced to convert to Catholicism when in fact his family had returned to the church after hundreds of years celebrating mass in secret.
In time, truth will out. In the meantime, the damage has been done.
